Was this really a good idea, Pru wondered on Monday morning. She was ready for work, and Martha was raring to go to the thrift store, dressed in light blue jeans with an elasticated waist and a loose pink T-shirt. Pru wore one of her work outfits, consisting of a green skirt, and white short sleeved blouse.

“That skirt looks good with your auburn hair,” Martha complimented her. “I wish I had a youthful figure like yours, and your fresh face.”

“Thanks.” Pru smiled. “You’re looking pretty spiffy yourself.”

“I like wearing comfy clothes at my age.” Martha glanced down at Teddy who looked up at them hopefully. “Wanna come? I bet I can sneak you into the thrift store.”

“Ruff!” Yes!

“Are you sure? What if they don’t allow dogs – even Teddy?”

“I bet they’ll make an exception for me.” Martha waved away her concern. “How could they deny Teddy’s cute little face?”

She had to admit that Teddy was definitely sweet and appealing – sometimes strangers came up to them saying he looked just like a little teddy bear.

They hopped into Pru’s SUV and set off. The neighboring dwellings were mostly Victorian era houses or else faux ones, like Martha’s. The street was quiet, apart from the occasional passing car.

“You can stop here.” Martha directed her outside the small thrift shop. “If they don’t have what I want, I’ll try the handmade shop. It’s not too far to walk. And then Teddy and me will walk home.”

“Are you sure it won’t be too much for you?”

“If it is, I’ll call Mitch. Or maybe Jesse.” Martha winked. “And put in a good word for you.”

“Martha—” Her eyes widened.

“Don’t worry.” Martha chuckled. “I’ll tell him yoga’s on tomorrow night.”

With that, Pru waved goodbye and watched for a minute as Martha and Teddy walked into the store. They didn’t come back out, so hopefully the management were understanding or else fell under Teddy’s – or Martha’s spell – and allowed them to shop there.

She made it to the library with one minute to spare. After sliding behind the returns desk, she smiled at Barbara. “Good morning.”

“Good morning.” Barbara nodded, dressed severely once more in a black suit with a cream blouse. “I’m glad you’re not late, Pru.”

“So am I. Today I gave Martha and Teddy a ride to the store.”

“Very well.” Barbara strode to the reference desk and sat down.

She glanced at her boss out of the corner of her eye. She really couldn’t see Barbara as a killer. How many suspects would Martha find at the farmers’ market next weekend? Or would Mitch and Jesse crack the case before then? But … it would be fun to see what sort of get up Martha could make for herself – and hear her tell fortunes – for entertainment purposes, of course.

But … was it really ethical? Martha had promised only to say positive things, and if it meant they could catch Chantal’s killer, surely that counted for a lot?
